Shasta Vent vs Selkirk: Honest Chimney Pipe Comparison

Shasta Vent vs Selkirk: Honest Chimney Pipe Comparison

Quick answer: Shasta Vent All-Fuel HT and Selkirk Ultra-Temp are both double-wall, insulated Class A chimneys listed to UL 103 HT. Both need 2" of clearance to combustibles, and both use twist-lock joints secured with locking bands. The main differences:

  • Steel: Shasta Vent uses 304 stainless for both walls. Ultra-Temp pairs a 304 stainless inner liner with a 430 stainless outer wall.
  • Sizes: Selkirk offers many more diameters.
  • Canada: Selkirk sells separate chimney lines listed for the Canadian market.
  • DIY warranty: Selkirk publishes specific coverage for homeowner installs.

For a standard 6" or 8" wood stove chimney, we think Shasta Vent is the stronger pick if you want 304 stainless inside and out and a complete kit in one box. Pick Selkirk if you need an unusual size, a Canadian listing or published warranty terms for a DIY install.

Side-by-side comparison

The specs below are as each manufacturer publishes them, checked October 2026. This comparison uses Selkirk Ultra-Temp, Selkirk’s stainless all-fuel chimney for the US market. Selkirk now markets its products as “Selkirk by Duravent,” but Ultra-Temp is its own listed system. Links to the sources are at the end of this article.

Where Shasta Vent stands out

304 stainless on the outer wall too. Ultra-Temp’s 304 inner liner matches Shasta Vent’s. The difference is the outer wall: Ultra-Temp uses 430, and Shasta Vent uses 304. The outer wall faces rain, snow and freeze-thaw cycles above the roof, and 304 generally resists corrosion better than 430. See 304 vs. 430 Stainless Steel Chimney Pipe.

Complete kits for the two most common installs. The Thru-The-Wall Kit includes the wall thimble, tee with cleanout cap, tee support, two wall brackets, a pipe section and the cap. The Thru-The-Ceiling Kit includes the support box, attic insulation shield, storm collar and cap. Both come in 6" and 8". Add chimney pipe (plus flashing for a roof install) and you’re set. See Chimney Pipe Kits Explained.

A focused 6" and 8" lineup. Most residential wood stoves use a 6" or 8" flue, and that’s all we make. Every part we sell is designed for those two sizes. Not sure which you need? See 6 Inch vs 8 Inch Chimney Pipe.

Where Selkirk may be the better pick

You need a 4", 5" or 7" flue, or anything over 8". Ultra-Temp is Type HT from 4" to 8" and UL 103 listed from 10" to 14". Shasta Vent makes 6" and 8" only. Always size the chimney to the appliance. See What Happens If You Use the Wrong Chimney Pipe Size? and 4 Inch Chimney Pipe: What It’s Actually For.

You’re installing in Canada. Selkirk sells Canadian chimney lines such as SuperVent 2100, listed to ULC-S629. Shasta Vent doesn’t publish a Canadian listing.

You’re installing it yourself and want the warranty spelled out. Selkirk’s warranty gives homeowner installs 10 years of free replacement. Shasta Vent’s full warranty applies to professional installs.

You’d rather buy locally. Selkirk has been making chimney products for decades and is widely stocked by hearth dealers and home-improvement retailers.

You want a galvanized finish. Selkirk’s Galva-Temp has a galvanized outer wall and can be combined with Ultra-Temp.

You’re extending an existing Selkirk chimney. Stay with Selkirk, because listed chimney systems can’t be mixed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mix Shasta Vent and Selkirk chimney parts?
No. Even though both use twist-lock joints, each brand is tested and listed as its own system. Mixing components can void the listing and the warranty and can create a fire hazard. If you’re extending or repairing a chimney, use the same brand that’s already installed.

Is ceramic blanket or mineral wool insulation better?
Both are packed 1" thick between the walls, and both chimneys are listed to UL 103 HT. The insulation keeps flue gases hot for good draft and keeps the outer wall cooler. See Insulated vs Air-Cooled Chimney Pipe and how chimney height affects draft.

Can I install it myself and keep the warranty?
Selkirk publishes coverage for homeowner installs: 10 years of free replacement, then reduced-cost replacement. Shasta Vent’s full warranty applies when a professional installs the chimney: a licensed contractor with chimney experience, a CSIA-certified sweep, an NFI-certified specialist or a WETT-certified professional. Whichever brand you choose, read the warranty before you buy. See Can I Install a Wood Stove Chimney Myself?

Which brand lasts longer?
Chimney life depends mostly on fuel, burn habits and maintenance. Stainless grade helps with corrosion resistance. See How Long Does Chimney Pipe Last? and How to Clean a Class A Chimney Pipe Safely.

Which is the best chimney pipe for a wood stove?
The best pipe is a UL 103 HT listed system in the right diameter for your stove, installed to the manufacturer’s instructions. For the full checklist, see the Best Chimney Pipe for Wood Stove Buyer’s Guide.
