Shasta Vent vs DuraVent: Honest Chimney Pipe Comparison

Shasta Vent vs DuraVent: Honest Chimney Pipe Comparison

Quick answer: Shasta Vent All-Fuel HT and DuraVent DuraTech are both double-wall, insulated Class A chimneys listed to UL 103 HT, and both require 2" of clearance to combustibles. The main differences:

  • Steel: Shasta Vent uses 304 stainless steel for both walls. DuraTech uses 430 stainless.
  • Sizes: DuraVent offers more diameters, including 5" and 7".
  • Canada: DuraVent publishes Canadian listings. Shasta Vent doesn’t.

Pick Shasta Vent if you want 304 stainless inside and out in a 6" or 8" system. Pick DuraVent if you need an odd flue size or a Canadian listing.

Where Shasta Vent stands out

304 stainless on both walls. Type 304 is an austenitic stainless steel and generally resists corrosion better than ferritic 430. That matters most on the inner wall, which faces moisture, creosote and acidic flue gases. DuraTech and DuraPlus use 430 for the inner wall. DuraVent prefers 430 because it expands less with heat. Both designs pass the same UL 103 HT tests. Our guide 304 vs. 430 Stainless Steel Chimney Pipe explains the trade-offs.

A heavier outer wall. Shasta Vent’s outer wall is .020" stainless. DuraTech’s stainless outer wall is .016".

A locking band on every joint. Each Shasta Vent joint twist-locks and is then secured with a locking band, so sections can’t be twisted apart by accident. DuraTech joints are designed to stay locked without bands, and DuraVent sells bands as an optional extra. Both approaches are listed. Ours builds the second lock into every joint.

Complete kits in both sizes. The Thru-The-Wall Kit and Thru-The-Ceiling Kit bundle the support components for the two most common installs, and our kits come in both 6" and 8". Add pipe (plus flashing for a roof install, and a firestop for each extra floor) and you’re set. Not sure which kit fits your house? Where DuraVent may be the better pick

You need a 5" or 7" flue, or something larger than 8". DuraTech comes in 5" through 8", and DuraVent publishes a separate line for 10" to 24". Shasta Vent makes 6" and 8" only. Never undersize a chimney to fit the pipe you’d like to buy. See What Happens If You Use the Wrong Chimney Pipe Size?

You’re installing in Canada. DuraVent lists DuraTech to ULC S604, and its Canada-only lines (DuraTech Canada and DuraTech Premium) to CAN/ULC-S629. Shasta Vent doesn’t publish a Canadian listing.

You want an air-cooled triple-wall design. DuraPlus combines insulation with a ventilated air space. See Do I Need a Double Wall or Triple Wall Chimney Pipe? and Insulated vs Air-Cooled Chimney Pipe.

You’d rather buy locally. DuraVent is widely stocked by hearth shops and home-improvement retailers, which helps if you want to pick parts up the same day.

You’re extending an existing DuraVent chimney. Stay with the brand that’s already installed, because listed chimney systems can’t be mixed.

Where they’re the same

  • Both are factory-built chimneys listed to UL 103 HT and suitable for wood stoves.
  • Both need a 2" air-space clearance to combustibles.
  • Both passed the same 2,100°F chimney-fire test sequence.
  • Both limit offsets to 30° from vertical, using 15° and 30° elbows, with a maximum of two offsets. See How Many Elbows Can a Chimney Have?
  • Both tie full warranty coverage to a professional installation.
  • Both must meet the 3-2-10 height rule and your local code.

Frequently asked questions

Are Shasta Vent and DuraVent chimney parts compatible?
No. Each brand’s chimney is tested and listed as its own system, so components can’t be mixed. Mixing brands can void the listing and the warranty and can create a fire hazard. If you’re extending or repairing a chimney, use the same brand that’s already installed.

Which is better for a wood stove, Shasta Vent or DuraVent?
Both are UL 103 HT listed for wood stoves, so either is a safe choice when installed correctly. The decision usually comes down to diameter, steel grade, whether you’re in Canada and what’s already installed. For the full buying checklist, see the Best Chimney Pipe for Wood Stove Buyer’s Guide.

Do Shasta Vent sections need locking bands?
Yes. Every joint is twist-locked and then secured with a locking band. No screws are needed. See How to Install a Class A Chimney Pipe for the full assembly steps.

Do I need a professional installer to keep the warranty?
For full coverage, yes, with either brand. Shasta Vent and DuraVent both define a professional as a licensed contractor with chimney experience, a CSIA-certified sweep, an NFI-certified specialist or a WETT-certified professional. Both also require annual inspection and cleaning by a certified sweep. Read each manufacturer’s warranty before you buy.

How long does Class A chimney pipe last?
That depends on the fuel, how hot you burn and how well the chimney is maintained. Annual cleaning and burning dry wood make the biggest difference. See How Long Does Chimney Pipe Last? and How to Clean a Class A Chimney Pipe Safely.
