Air-cooled chimney designs were developed for factory-built (zero-clearance) fireplaces, which produce different exhaust profiles and are listed as complete systems with their specific chimney. If you own such a fireplace, its manual names its chimney, and that’s the end of the discussion: you use the listed system. What you should not do is repurpose air-cooled fireplace chimney for a wood stove because the sections were cheap or already in the attic. The listing doesn’t transfer, and the performance mismatch shows up as smoke, creosote, and cold-morning lighting battles.
Why cold climates settle the argument
An air-cooled flue in July is a mild handicap. The same flue in a northern January is actively working against you: subzero air circulating around the flue chills exhaust fast, draft sags, and creosote accumulates at the top of the run where gases are coolest.
