Why Insulation Cannot Touch Chimney Pipe
The Shasta Vent installation instructions are specific about this. Building insulation of any kind is considered combustible and must be kept at least 2 inches away from the chimney pipe. The required 2 inch clearance must be an air gap, and it cannot be filled with any other material, combustible or otherwise.
That last part surprises people. Even noncombustible material packed into the gap is a violation, because the air space is doing real work. Class A pipe runs cooler on the outside than a single wall connector, but it is not cold, and the clearance is what the system was tested with. Fill it and you have changed the conditions the listing is based on.
Loose fill insulation is the specific problem an attic creates. Blown-in cellulose and fiberglass settle, shift when someone walks a joist, and drift when wind washes through soffit vents. Batts get pushed around during other attic work and end up somewhere nobody intended. When Do You Need an Attic Insulation Shield?
You need one when the chimney passes through an unenclosed attic. This is the most common through-the-ceiling wood stove installation in a house, and the shield is a required component of it, not an upgrade. It is included in the 6-inch Thru-The-Ceiling Kit for exactly that reason.
You need one anywhere else insulation or debris could reach the pipe. The requirement is not written around the word "attic." It is written around contact. A knee wall cavity, an unfinished crawl space above a room, a floor cavity with insulation between levels, or any concealed space where loose material sits near the chimney all trigger the same requirement.
You do not need one if the chimney is fully enclosed in a chase through that space. A framed chase built to maintain the full 2 inch clearance already does the shield's job structurally, so the shield becomes redundant. This only applies if the chase genuinely encloses the run through the attic. A partial box or a bit of blocking is not a chase.
A bare attic today is not a permanent condition. Uninsulated attics get insulated later, often by a contractor who has no idea a chimney rule applies to their work. If there is any chance insulation gets added in the next twenty years, install the shield now. It costs far less than opening the ceiling back up.
Insulation Shield vs Firestop Radiation Shield vs Roof Radiation Shield

Firestop Radiation Shield. Goes at a floor or ceiling penetration between levels of the building. Maintains clearance at the penetration and closes the opening so a fire cannot travel freely from one floor to the next through the chase or cavity. This is what people are looking for when they search for a firestop ceiling component or a chimney pipe firestop radiation shield. In a multi-level installation you need one at every level the chimney passes.
Roof Radiation Shield. Goes at the roof penetration and protects the joists and rafters where the chimney passes through the roof. Here the logic reverses. The roof radiation shield is only required if the chimney is enclosed in a chase immediately before it passes through the roof. If the run is unenclosed before it hits the roof, you do not need it.
Note the inversion between the first and third. A chase in the attic removes the need for an insulation shield and creates the need for a roof radiation shield. That is not an inconsistency. It reflects what each part is actually protecting against. Loose insulation is only a threat in an open attic, and heat trapped against roof framing is only a threat inside an enclosed chase.

How to Install an Attic Insulation Shield
The shield goes in during the vertical run, after the ceiling support box is set and before you finish the pipe out through the roof. The step-by-step Class A chimney installation guide covers the full sequence. Here is where the shield fits.
- Confirm the pipe is plumb through the ceiling. The shield centers on the pipe. If the pipe leans, the shield will not sit square and your clearance will be uneven, tight on one side and generous on the other. Clearance is measured at the closest point, so the tight side is the only side that counts.
- Set the shield on the attic-side framing. It lands on top of the framing of the last floor level before the chimney exits the roof, typically directly over the ceiling support box.
- Center it on the pipe and fasten the base plate. Fasten through the base plate into solid framing per the installation instructions. The shield needs to stay put when somebody is crawling around up there.
- Verify the clearance all the way around. The pipe should sit centered in the sleeve with the full 2 inches of open air on every side. Do not shim, pack, or seal the gap.
- Clear insulation back to the shield and keep it below the rim. Push loose fill away from the base, then check the depth. Insulation should not be mounded over the top of the sleeve.

Common Attic Insulation Shield Mistakes
Skipping it because the attic is bare right now. Covered above, and it is the most common one. Insulation gets added. The chimney does not get re-inspected when it does.
Insulation deeper than the shield is tall. Modern attic insulation targets are deep, and depths that meet current energy code can approach or pass the top of a standard shield. If your insulation depth exceeds the shield height, do not improvise an extension out of scrap metal or cardboard dams. A site-built extension is not part of the listed system. Contact the manufacturer or your building official for the correct approach before you close it up.
Substituting sheet metal for the listed part. Bending your own sleeve is not equivalent. The shield is part of a tested and listed system, and an inspector who spots a shop-made version has a legitimate reason to fail the install. Using an insulation shield where a firestop is required. They are not interchangeable. A floor penetration between two conditioned levels needs a firestop radiation shield. Putting an insulation shield there does not satisfy the requirement, and vice versa.
Sealing around the pipe with foam or caulk. Attic air sealing is good practice everywhere except here. Nothing goes in the 2 inch gap. Leaving stored items against the shield. Boxes and stored belongings count as debris. Keep the area around the chimney clear, and keep it clear after the install is signed off.
