Why Elbows Hurt Draft

A straight, vertical chimney produces the strongest possible draft because there is nothing interrupting the flow. Every time the path of the flue changes direction, it creates resistance. Exhaust gases have to work harder to move through the turn, which slows them down. Slower, cooler gases mean weaker draft, and weaker draft means more potential for smoke to back up into the home, longer startup times, and more creosote accumulation inside the pipe.

The Two Different Elbow Limits You Need to Know

Stove pipe is the single-wall black pipe that connects directly to your wood stove and runs inside the room to the point where it meets the Class A chimney. NFPA 211, the national standard for chimneys and venting systems, limits the stove pipe connector to no more than two 90-degree elbows. The pipe should be as short and direct as possible, with a minimum rise of one quarter inch per foot toward the chimney.

Why You Should Use Fewer Elbows When Possible

Every additional elbow adds resistance, reduces draft strength, creates a location where creosote can accumulate, and adds a connection point that requires inspection and maintenance. The ideal chimney installation is straight and vertical from stove to cap with no elbows at all.
When an offset is unavoidable, using a 15-degree elbow pair rather than 30-degree elbows will create less flow restriction and a shallower angle. Two 15-degree elbows paired together create an offset with the same 30-degree maximum angle allowed by the system but with a gentler transition in each individual elbow.
Supporting Every Offset Is Not Optional
Every offset in a Shasta Vent installation must be supported by an Elbow Support Bracket or Tee Support Bracket. This is not a recommendation. It is a requirement of the installation. An unsupported offset places lateral stress on the pipe connections and can cause the system to become unstable over time. The Elbow Support Bracket also serves as a lateral support for chimneys that extend more than five feet above the roofline.
