Quick Answer
Chimney support brackets do two different jobs:
- Load-bearing supports carry the weight of the chimney. On a Shasta Vent system that's the Ceiling Support Box or the Tee Support, each rated for up to 50 feet of chimney.
- Bracing holds the chimney plumb and steady but does not carry weight. That's the Adjustable Wall Bracket and the Elbow Support Bracket used as a lateral support.
For Shasta Vent All-Fuel HT: secure the chimney at least every 10 feet, and stabilize it if more than 5 feet extends above the roof penetration. Other listed systems specify different numbers, so always work from the instructions for the system you own.
Carrying weight vs. holding it steady
- Load-bearing. The Ceiling Support Box (interior runs) or the Tee Support (through-the-wall runs) carries the stack above it.
- Bracing. The Adjustable Wall Bracket provides lateral stability only. It is not designed to support the chimney's weight.
- You usually need both. Weight has to land somewhere solid, and the pipe still has to be held against wind.
- You may need more than one load-bearing support. Each Shasta Vent support is rated to 50 feet. Taller systems can take an additional Tee Support mid-run.

Wall bracing: exterior runs
- The Tee Support carries the stack. Mount each side bracket with at least four #8, 2-1/2 inch wood screws into a structural member, or an appropriate masonry lag screw on masonry.
- Adjustable Wall Brackets go on at least every 10 feet, unless the chimney is already secured by a Ceiling Support Box, Tee Support, or Firestop Radiation Shield.
- The bracket adjusts from 2 to 8 inches of standoff. Two inches is the minimum clearance to combustibles. Don't shorten it for looks.
- If the Tee Support sits above the tee, no more than 10 feet of chimney can be between them.
- Mount to studs or blocking. Siding and sheathing are not an attachment point.

Roof bracing: above the roofline
- If the chimney extends more than 5 feet past the roof penetration, it must be stabilized. An Elbow Support Bracket combined with guy-wire does this.
- Additional supports go on at intervals of no more than 5 feet after that.
- You often don't control the height. The 3-2-10 rule sets minimum chimney height, and a steep roof or a low penetration can push you past 5 feet whether you planned for it or not.
Offsets need their own support
- Elbows cannot carry the weight of the chimney above an offset. An Elbow Support Bracket or Tee Support has to.
- More than 8 feet of chimney inside the offset means an additional Elbow Support Bracket.
- Maximum of two offsets and returns, four elbows total, at 15 or 30 degrees. Elbows can't be stacked for a steeper angle.
Connector pipe is different
The black stove pipe between the appliance and the ceiling is not chimney pipe, and a stove pipe bracket is not a chimney support bracket.
- Code requires connectors to be securely supported and sloped at least 1/4 inch of rise per foot of run. It does not set a spacing interval, so follow your connector manufacturer's instructions.
- A horizontal uninsulated connector run is limited to 75 percent of the vertical chimney height above the connector. A listed connector is limited to 100 percent.
- Single-wall connector needs far more clearance than the insulated chimney above it, so any bracket has to hold it at the connector's clearance.
Mounting to masonry
- Use the fastener the instructions specify. Shasta Vent calls for an appropriate masonry lag screw where the Tee Support lands on masonry.
- Select the anchor from the anchor manufacturer's data for the material you're actually drilling into. Solid brick, hollow brick, block, and mortar joints have different published values.
- Use a hammer drill and the specified bit size. Oversized holes can't be recovered.
- If the masonry is spalling or the mortar rakes out easily, repair it first. No bracket is stronger than what it's fastened to.
Pre-install checklist
- Supports rated for your diameter and total system height
- Wall brackets at least every 10 feet unless otherwise secured
- Stabilization planned if more than 5 feet stands above the roof
- Elbow support at every offset
- Every bracket into framing, blocking, or sound masonry
- Standoffs left at listed clearance
- All components from the same listed system
That last one matters. Do not mix components from different chimney systems or manufacturers, and don't modify parts or improvise. It can void the listing and the warranty, and inspectors look for it.
